Ghana Elections 2012 : 3,000 cases of multiple registration recorded in biometric exercise

About 3,000 people are said to have engaged in multiple registration in the ongoing biometric registration exercise.
This was confirmed by the acting director of Public Affairs Christian Owusu Parry in an interview with Joy News' Israel Laryea. He said an adjudication committee has been constituted to look into the incidence of double registration and to "examine each case on its own merits."

According to him, few of the cases have been referred to the police to take action, adding, those found culpable will be made to face the law. He said those found guilty are likely to have their names completely struck out of the register. Meanwhile, eight million people are said to have been registered out of an estimated 12 million people expected to register.

Parry dismissed assertion there is shortage of registration forms at some polling areas. He said there is "no record of shortage of forms" at the polling centres, adding, there are enough registration forms for the completion of the registration exercise.

Whilst conceding there are "occasional breakdown of equipments", Parry noted there is a contingency plan to have technicians repair them as soon as practicable. He said on the few occasions where the equipment could not be repaired; they are replaced with new ones whilst the faulty ones are taken to experts to repair them. He said the EC will manage the process until the exercise comes to an end.
The exercise is in its third phase, with the fourth and final phase expected to end on May 5.
