Debate on new constituencies should not constrain the EC - Gunu

Mr James Gunu, a political activist, has observed that the current, debate on the creation of new constituencies could create problems for the integrity of Ghana's electoral system.

He said discussions on the issue should be dispassionate so that the Electoral Commission would not feel constrained by the differing stance of the political stakeholders.

Mr Gunu, speaking to the GNA at the weekend, said the impression that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was against the new constituencies while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was for it was unfortunate as views on the issue should be based on the laws and precedents related to the issue.

He said some of the comments made by some stakeholders were tantamount to inciting the public against the EC and expressed regret that some political stakeholders were encouraging this trend.

Mr Gunu said segmentation of religious groupings for special appeals was dangerous and must stop.

He said issues to be discussed in the coming elections still lies on group and individual integrity, track records of regimes, issues of development and capacity to tackle corruption.
