EC assures political parties of credible voters' register

The Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday assured all political parties of a credible voters' register that would facilitate free, fair and transparency in Election 2012.

Mr. George Gyabaah, Brong-Ahafo Regional Director of the Commission, said all anomalies and discrepancies detected on the biometric voters register during the just ended voters exhibition exercise would be rectified by the end of September.

Addressing members of the Regional Inter-party dialogue committee at a meeting in Sunyani, Mr. Gyabaah explained that the anomalies detected in the register such as misplaced of photographs, discrepancies in serial numbers and the wrong spelling of names were due to technical hitch.

He said there was no cause for alarm as none of the eligible voters on the register would be disenfranchised.

Mr. Gyabaah appealed to political parties which had peculiar problems during the exercise to contact the EC immediately for redress.

Mr. Michael Amponsah, Deputy Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education, stressed the need to expand the work of inter-party committee dialogues to the newly created districts.

He expressed disgust about "verbal warfare" on the air waves and called on proprietors of radio stations to monitor and ensure that their employees worked in tandem with ethical standards.
