Blame public apathy for low response to exhibition of voters’ register - Pensioner

Mr Paul Korsigah Kumaglo, a retired Public Servant, said public apathy rather than the Electoral Commission (EC) must be blamed for the poor public response to the exhibition of the biometric voters register.

He said public apathy rather than perceived poor publicity by the EC was to blame for the lackadaisical response to the exercise.

Mr Kumaglo, 70, said he personally tried without success to convince seven registered voters in his own household to go and check their personal information on the register.

He was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at the Post Office Exhibition Centre in Aflao on Tuesday.

Mr Kumaglo said the attitude among some eligible voters was that the data on their biometric voter identity cards were enough.

He said given several radio announcements on the various radio stations on the exercise, only a scientific verification could explain the low turnout.

At the Post Office Centre a total of 352 people out 2,782 registered voters verified their data by 1700 hours on Tuesday with only seven filing for the correction of their ages.

At Preventive School a total of 90 out of 778 voters turned up with two complaining about a mistake in their ages.

Mr John Gadzi, Post Office Exhibition Officer, said the poor public response was the main problem with the exhibition.
