President Mahama suspends campaign following collapse of Achimota Melcom building

President John Dramani Mahama, has suspended his campaign tour of the Upper East Region, and was returning to Accra, following the collapse of the Melcom building at Achimota-Neoplan, in Accra, on Wednesday morning.

"The President was informed about the collapse of the building a short while ago and he is returning to Accra immediately," a source close to the Presidency told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra.

The source said the President's convoy, which was close to Bawku, was returning to Bolgatanga.

Mr John Jinapor, Spokesman for the President, told GNA that: "The President has suspended his campaign in the wake of trapped persons in the collapsed Achiomota Melcom building."

President Mahama, who is also the National Democratic Congress candidate for Election 2012, was expected to visit Bawku, Garu Tampe, Zebila and Binduri among others on Wednesday.

Initial reports said several people were trapped in rubble after the Milcom build collapsed, and a number of people are feared to have been killed in the tragedy.

Rescue teams are at the spot trying to reach survivors. There is no official figure of the dead as yet.
