Assemblyman assaults a registration officer

Drama unfolded at a registration centre at Amanful West Electoral Area in Takoradi when the assembly member for the area, Mr. Joseph Antwi Boateng, assaulted a registration officer.

The incident happened on May 03 when the assemblyman and man stood in as guarantors for a woman to enable her to register because she had no identity card. But after the registration a representative of a political party picked a challenge form and filed a protest that the lady was not resident in the area.

In view of that the registration officer, Mr. Clearance Ackah, said he would keep the voter identity card of the woman until the Judicial Electoral Committee had finished its investigation after which the card would either be given back to her or confiscated.

Mr. Boateng got furious and pounced on the registration officer and forcefully collected the card from him. But when Mr. Boateng was leaving the centre man pounced on him, retrieved the card from him and gave it back to the Electoral Officer.

The Electoral Officer later made a report to the Takoradi Central Police Station and the assemblyman was arrested and charged with assault.

When the GNA contacted the Takoradi District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police Huseini Musah Adwinaba about the incident, he confirmed it and said the suspect would be put before court this week for assault. The registration officer was treated at the Takoradi Hospital and discharged.
