Ghana Elections 2012 Daily News Review - 10th May, 2012

Headlines making news in today's review include Ghana for Peace Movement begins nationwide tour. Ghana for peace movement, a non partisan youth group with membership from different parts of the country, has begun a nationwide peace tour aimed at ensuring that all Ghanaian youth, irrespective of their political, religious or ethnic affiliations, embrace peace ahead of the December general elections. The Chronicle further reports that members of the movement say their aim is to talk to the Ghanaian youth about the importance of peace being enjoined. This, they have, promised, they would do between now and January 2013.

Meanwhile, Ghanaians have been asked to put the nation ahead of ethnicity and partisan political agenda .Mr. S.K. Obeng, a former Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), said "this is necessary to protect the unity, stability and cohesion of the nation."The Ghanaian Times quotes with the headline Put nation ahead of ethnicity and partisanship.

The New Crusading Guide also informs us that Ghana's First Lady, Dr. Mrs. Ernestina Naadu Mills has called on Ghanaians to pray for the country as we head towards the polls in December to ensure peace reigns supreme before, during and after the polls. The First Lady made the call when she joined a congregation at the Calvary Presbyterian Church, Haatso near Accra to worship. She advised the church to instill the culture of praying in their children and urged them to "Pray for election 2012" and consider the country in their prayers especially as this year's elections draw near.

In other news, the Daily Graphic states the a headline Bawunia misled public that the Ghana Statistical  Service(GSS)has  expressed concern  over the  misinterpretation  of  some indicators and inflation figures by the  running mate to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate for Election 2012, Dr. Mahamadu  Bawumia, which  tends  to undermine the  service's credibility. Reacting  to some comments made by Dr. Bawumia in his  address at the  Ferdinand Ayim  Memorial Lecture in Accra, the  acting  Government  Statistician, Dr.  Philomena Nyarko, said although Dr. Bawumia admitted that single digit inflation was not a new phenomenon; he cast doubts on the current level of inflation in Ghana.

From the Ghanaian Times and the Daily Graphic,  Mr. Amadu Sulley, Deputy Electoral Commissioner, on Tuesday pledged to keep the integrity flame of the Commission high and apply the laws firmly in the discharge of his official duties."As the Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission, I would uphold, preserve, protect and defend the constitution… as by the law established. I would not directly or indirectly communicate or reveal to any person any matter, which shall be brought under my consideration… and I would uphold the sovereignty and integrity of Ghana.

We are told again from the same paper that Prosper Afelete, Ketu North Director of the National Commission on Civic Education, has advised the youth against destroying and defacing posters belonging to political parties and their candidates. He said the practice was equally as dangerous and condemnable as the use of intemperate language by politicians. This was revealed under the headline Avoid defacing campaign posters.

In other developments the Daily Graphic reports that don't allow politicians to mislead you-Zangina Junior High School (JHS) pupils, especially those who have not attained the age of 18, have been advised not to allow themselves to be used by politicians. The Afigya  Kwabre District  Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Wilberforce Zangina, who gave the advice during  the Citizenship Day Celebration by the NCCE at  the Afrancho District  Assembly Cluster of Schools, said  there was the need for pupils to be wary of politicians who  always  sought to use  the pupils for their  selfish  interest.

Another report from the same paper reveals that Sakara canvasses for support. A Presidential aspirant of the Convention People's Party (CPP), Dr. Abu Sakara, has said that the party needs committed dedicated and selfless people to  help the CPP recapture  political power. The honour  we can  do to  the  memory of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame  Nkrumah , the founder of the  CPP, was  for all supporters to work  hard  to bring  the CPP to power, he stated.

Still from the Daily Graphic, Convention People's Party presidential aspirant,  Mr. Bright Akwetey, has  assured Ghanaians of his readiness to fight corruption and indiscipline if elected as the flag-bearer for the party and ultimately win the  presidential election.' I am ready to serve and lead Ghanaians. I have fought corruption, injustices, and crimes and will not stop. No matter who you are. Whether a party member or not if you offend the law. I will laws of the land, ''he stated.

In other reports, NPP, NDC must stop blame game on economy. The Progressive People's Party(PPP) says  it is highly  disappointed with  the  New Patriotic  Party (NPP) and Mills-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) Administration which have been engaging in blame games  at the expense  of seeking  the welfare of the people. According  to the party,' one way  to stop this dangerous game is to expand  the political  space to allow  other political parties to participate in public discussions on important national  matters such as  the economy and job  creation.''

The Daily Graphic informs readers that two electoral areas sue EC for non-registration. The people  of the Akunkongo-Abemingo and the  Atosale -Azaasi Electoral areas in the Kassena-Nankana District  in the Upper East Region have  sued the  Electoral Commission (EC) over its alleged failure to organize district level  elections and the biometric voters registration exercise in the areas. A suit dated May 5,2012 and filed by Sima Consultancy  on behalf  of the people  is seeking the Accra High Court to declare that the EC, by its  acts and omissions, violated and infringed upon  the constitutional  right of the people  of the two electoral areas to vote  and participate in local  and national  electoral processes.

We end today's review with news from the Daily Graphic which indicates that Mills, Nana charged to control supporter. The Ghana Peace Campaign 2012 called on President John Atta Mills and Nana Addo Dankwa  Akufo-Addo, presidential candidates for  the National Democratic Congress(NDC) and the New Patriotic Party(NPP) respectively in the December 7 elections, to do more to protect the peace of the country. The group, which is campaigning for the peace of Ghana to be kept intact before, during and after the elections, said both President Mills and Nana Akufo Addo had not done enough to rein in their supporters for escalating electoral tensions in the country.
