EC educates parliamentary candidates on electoral processes

The Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday educated parliamentary candidates in the Northern Region on the electoral processes with the aim of promoting free, fair and transparent polls in the December elections.

Mr Sylvester Kanyi, Northern Regional Director of the EC, said in a bid to enhance the credibility of the elections, the EC had embarked on a number of training programmes with various stakeholders and mentioned political parties, the media, community based organizations and women groups as beneficiaries of the trainings.

He said the sensitization, which was in a form of a dialogue, was to enhance the credibility of the poll through peaceful campaigning and casting of ballots.

Mr Kanyi said the region had 31 constituencies, 705 Electoral Areas, 2,386 polling stations, a voter population of 1,263,462, and 155 parliamentary candidates out of which seven were women, for the coming elections.

He said the training was aimed at deepening the confidence of the candidates through reflection of the inbuilt integrity of the electoral system, stressing that over the years, the EC had applied the laws, rules and procedures governing the elections firmly without fear of any candidate.

He added that the two-day workshop would update the participants on preparations made by the EC, provide platform for interaction and exchange of ideas especially between the candidates and the EC.

Alhaji Amadu Sule, Deputy Director of the EC in charge of Finance and Administration, described the biometric voting system as the best so far for the country which would produce credible results than the previous voting systems.

Alhaji Sule said the current voting population of 13 million was considered the most acceptable voter register considering the country's present population.

He urged the various political parties to nominate loyal, competent and articulate persons to represent them as agents.
