Euphoria envelopes Baba Yara Stadium as NDP goes to congress

The maiden national congress of the breakaway National Democratic Party (NDP) to elect its presidential candidate for the December 7 polls is underway in Kumasi as delegates and supporters poured into the Baba Yara Sports Stadium amidst scenes of euphoria. The organisers are expecting more than 3,000 delegates and observers at the event, which would also be used to launch the NDP's manifesto and constitution.
As early as 0600 hours, bus-loads of drum-beating, buoyed-up-loyalists, adorned in the party's colours and paraphernalia, started arriving.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered that former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, tipped to be confirmed as flag-bearer, and the husband, former President Jerry Rawlings, are already in Kumasi.
The interim National Chairman, Dr Josiah Aryeh, in a chat with journalists, said he was confident of smooth and successful congress.
He said they had done enough ground work and that they did not anticipate any problems.
Dr Aryeh said the NDP was in for serious business and predicted strong performance in the upcoming elections. The party, he added, has a firm support base and had put in place the necessary structures to win over more voters.
