Second nationwide peace-walk organised in Accra

The National Peace Council in collaboration with the Ambassadors for Peace Initiative, a Non Governmental Organisation, on Monday organised the second National Peace walk to create awareness on the need for peace, tolerance and peaceful coexistence among the citizenry.

The nationwide walk, which commenced on July 30th in Wa, in the Upper West Region and had run through all the regional capitals with greater Accra being the last, ended at the forecourt of the state house.

The walk on the theme: "Peaceful elections for sustainable development", was embarked upon by members of the National Peace Council, members of the Ambassador for Peace Initiative and participants from selected Senior High Schools in Accra.

Addressing the crowed, Mr Rashid Pelpou, Deputy Majority Leader, said Ghana was one home, and it was important for all to see each other as part of the home.

He commended the organizers for the initiative, saying peace was a single factor that defined the democracy of the country, and it was time for Ghanaians to prove in the upcoming elections that Ghana really adhered to peace.

Mr Pelpou congratulated the students for their choice to become peace ambassadors, and their wish to join the world to preach peace before, during and after the elections, adding that their choice today would determine their future.

Most Reverend Emmanuel Asante, Chairman of the National Peace Council said politics was about competing ideas to pave the way for peace and sustainable development, and it was time Ghanaians began to act peace.

He said "the present gives rise to the future and so if we are able to maintain the present, the future would be easily managed by all".

Station Officer, Joseph Ampiah, Coordinator, API appealed to the public to pledge, protect and preserve peace in the upcoming elections, saying "we must embrace each other to preach peace since Ghana was a role model to other African countries".
